Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Endorses Josh Shapiro for Governor

“His commitment to fair representation and economic justice has far surpassed all other candidates in the field. He is truly the best choice for Pennsylvania workers.”

PENNSYLVANIAYesterday, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, the Commonwealth’s largest federation of labor organizations representing over 700,000 working women, men, and families in all of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, unanimously endorsed Attorney General Josh Shapiro for Governor.

“Josh Shapiro’s bold vision for our Commonwealth is a new day for working people. He will fight for an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work,” said AFL-CIO’s President, Rick Bloomingdale. “As Governor, Josh will defend and expand the right to organize and join a union. When working people come together, Josh Shapiro will have our back.”

AFL-CIO’s Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder added, “As Attorney General, Josh Shapiro has shown his dedication to fighting for justice for Pennsylvania’s working people. Throughout his time in office, Josh has helped resolve conflicts, end the UPMC-Highmark crisis, fought wage theft, and prosecuted the largest Davis-Bacon prevailing wage case in U.S. history.”

“Pennsylvania workers are the backbone of our economy, and as Attorney General, I’ve taken on the powerful and well-connected when they’ve tried to screw over workers,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “As Governor, I’ll never back down when someone threatens Pennsylvania workers – I’ll expand the right to organize, ensure every worker in Pennsylvania is paid a living wage, and veto any Republican attempt to pass right-to-work legislation. I’m proud to have the support of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and I’ll continue to stand with the 700,000 working women and men they represent.”

Throughout his career, Josh has stood up for Pennsylvania workers and defended their rights. In 2019, he helped end the UPMC – Highmark crisis, protecting access to health care for 1.9 million western Pennsylvanians. Throughout the pandemic, Josh held employers accountable who broke the law, including nursing homes administrators who falsified staffing records and left staff and residents in unsafe conditions, and he’s cracked down on worker misclassification to ensure workers get the benefits they’ve earned. In 2021, he took on the Commonwealth’s largest construction company when they ripped off their employees, winning more than $20 million in restitution for Pennsylvania workers, and led a coalition of nine Attorneys General to protect tipped workers and ensure they could keep their hard-earned tips.

Josh has a long track record of defending working people and holding powerful corporations accountable – and as Governor, he will protect the right to organize, support efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and ensure every Pennsylvanian has the right to join or form a union.

Since launching his campaign in October, Josh has been endorsed by major labor organizations like the SEIU PA State Council, the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, the Pennsylvania Amalgamated Transit Union, the EAS Carpenters, PSEA, Pennsylvania State Council of Sheet Metal Workers, and UFCW 1776.
